Patrick Doyle (SN 3057) born in Ballarat, was a 34 year old fitter when he enlisted in Maryborough on January 8th 1917. On March 19th he embarked aboard the Ballarat to serve with the 38th Battalion. In August he reached France where he was wounded twice. In November 1917 he sustained a mild wound to his ankle and in April 1918 a gunshot wound fractured his tibia. In between these events he was twice charged with being absent without leave. In October 1917 he absented himself for two weeks and was charged with desertion He was sentenced to a period of imprisonment, but this was suspended, and he was able to rejoin his unit. He returned home on the Morvada, reached Melbourne on February 20th 1919 and was discharged on June 12th.
His brother John also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
