Biography

James O'Keeffe (SN 3192) was born in Ballarat but enlisted at Kalgoorlie, W.A. on November 19th 1916. He was 36 years old, married to Alice and working as a miner. He was drafted to the 46th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Fremantle aboard the Persic on December 29th. He reached France in late May 1917. On October 11th 1917 he was killed in action near Passchendaele, has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

His brothers Frank and Mark also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as James O'Keefe.
