Biography

Frank O’Keeffe (SN 4278 ) born at Ballarat, was a 19 year old painter when he enlisted at Ballarat on July 16th 1915. He embarked aboard the Demosthenes on December 29th to serve with the 46th Infantry Battalion. He crossed to France in June 1916 and during his service there he was attached at different times to the 63rd then 51st Battalions. His service was largely without significant incident and he returned to Australia aboard the Commonwealth, disembarked at Melbourne on June 8th 1919 and was discharged on August 1st.

His brother James was killed in action in October 1917 and his brother Mark also served in the AIF and they are honoured with trees in the Avenue.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Frank O'Keefe.
