George Davey (SN 482) born at Ballarat, was a 29 year old railway fireman when he enlisted in Melbourne on December 19th 1916. On February 19th 1917 he embarked aboard the Ballarat and sailed to England. Attached to the Australian Light Rail Operating Company he reached France in July. He avoided battle wounds was troubled by health issues during much of his service. At war’s end he returned to Australia on the Zealandia, disembarked at Melbourne on June 28th 1919 and was discharged on August 7th.
His brother Samuel also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
