Samuel Davey (SN 10235) was born in Ballarat but was living in Hamilton at the time of his enlistment on March 15th 1916. The 42 year old plumber embarked from Melbourne with the 10th Field Company Engineers in June on board the Runic. After training in England he was posted to France in November 1916. The next twelve months seems to have been relatively uneventful but he was hospitalised with rheumatism in November 1917 and shipped back to England where he spent six weeks in hospital. His illness forced his return to Australia in March where he was discharged as 'medically unfit' on June 14th 1918.
His brother George also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
Samuel's wife Euphemia (nee Gordon) had three brothers who also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue. James was killed at Fromelles in 1916. Charles and Harold both returned home after service in France and Belgium.
