Biography

James Gordon (SN 3077) was born in Melbourne and educated at Macarthur Street State School in Ballarat before he enlisted in Sydney on September 20th 1915. At that time he was 26, single and employed as a hospital wardsman. He sailed from Sydney on board the Suevic in December and undertook further training in Egypt where he was allotted to the 58th Infantry Battalion. He died on the July 21st 1916 from wounds sustained at Fromelles and is buried in Daours Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

Two of his brothers also served in the AIF and are honoured with adjacent trees in the Avenue. Charles served in France, returning home in 1918 and Harold was wounded at Passchendaele in 1917 but returned home. His brother in law Samuel Davey also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
