Robert Norman Wardle was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Veterinary Surgeon when he enlisted with the Veterinary Corps - March 1917 Reinforcements as a Captain on 6 March 1917 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Vic, on board HMAT A42 Boorara on 10 May 1917. He was eventually attached with the 8th Australian Mobile Veterinary Service as Captain and given command of the unit. It appears he completed his service without major incident, illness or injury, returning home to Australia on 10 July 1919.
