John William Fraser (SN7484) born in Ballarat, was a 21 year old moulder when he enlisted in Geelong on June 26th 1917. On August 4th he embarked aboard the Themistocles and sailed first to Glasgow before joining the 6th Infantry Battalion in France in February 1918. In August he was wounded in action when he suffered a gunshot wound to his thigh, but he was able to rejoin his unit a month later. At war’s end he returned to Australia aboard the Persic, disembarked at Melbourne on July 13th 1919 and was discharged on September 28th.
His brother Donald also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
