William Bartle Pearce was born in Ballarat and was a Mining Manager by trade when he enlisted in the Tunnelling Companies, January 1918 Reinforcements on 9 February 1917 at the age of 29. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on 28 February 1918. On May 20th he reached France attached to the 2nd Australian Tunnelling Company and served out the remaining months of the war. After the war, illness delayed his return to Australia, but he finally returned on the Euripides and disembarked at Melbourne on October 20th 1919.
