Alfred Claude Overall was born in Ballarat and was a Storeman when he enlisted in the 46th Battalion, 10th Reinforcement on 13 November 1917 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on 28 February 1918. He was wounded in action (gas poisoning) on 25 August 1918 and was admitted to hospital two days later. On 12 December 1918 he was transferred to England before returning home to Australia on 31 December 1918, receiving a medical discharge on 1 February 1919.
