William Alfred Youens was a 25 year old single shunter when he enlisted as a Private with the 38th Battalion, B Company on the 23rd of February 1916. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Runic on the 20th of June 1916.
On the 9th of June 1917 William was wounded in action with a gunshot wound to his lung and abdomen. He returned to Australia on the 24th of October 1917 and was discharged on the 7th of December 1917 as medically unfit.
His brothers Albert and Norman also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
