Biography

Norman Harold Youens (SN 19339) born in Ballarat, was an 18 year old carpenter when he first enlisted February 9th 1916, but he was found fit only for Home Service. He was discharged in January 1917 ‘services no longer required’. He enlisted again in March 1917 and served at No.14 Australian Hospital at MacLeod, Melbourne. His third enlistment in January 1918 saw him allotted to the No.1 Sea Transport Staff. He served on two return voyages between Australia and Egypt or England aboard the Themistocles, the Suevic and the Marathon. His final voyage reached Melbourne on January 15th 1919 and he was discharged on January 23rd.

His brothers William and Albert also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
