Harry Arnold Day (SN 4997/ Lt.) was born at Nerrina on Ballarat’s outskirts and was a 27 year old civil servant with the railways department, married, when he enlisted on June 15th 1917. He embarked aboard the Ulysses on December 22nd , already at the rank of 2nd lieutenant, and sailed to England for service with the 29th Battalion. He crossed to France in June 1918 but his service was frequently interrupted by bouts of diarrhoea. In July 1918 he was promoted to lieutenant and transferred to the 32nd Battalion in October. After the war he returned home on the Prinz Ludwig, disembarked on September 5th 1919 and his appointment was terminated on September 28th.
His brother Gilbert also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
