Biography

Arthur Thomas Carmichael (SN 1221) had previously been rejected due to ‘defective vision’, but on April 3rd 1916 he was successful in enlisting at Melbourne. He was a 38 year old horse breaker, married to Elizabeth and living in Burnbank Street Ballarat. On October 30th 1917 he sailed from Melbourne on the Aeneas and, being an experienced horse handler, he was attached to the Australian Remount Unit in Egypt. In early March 1918 he was transferred to the Australian Veterinary Hospital at Calais in France. In March 1919 he left England on the Port Denison and disembarked at Melbourne on May 10th. He died on October 24th 1943 at the age of 52.
