Born in Ballarat, John William Gunn was a single 22 year old engine driver when he enlisted on the 9th of November 1917. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board SS Port Darwin on the 30th of April 1918.
On the 11th of December 1918 William was appointed driver, but reverted back to Gunner on the 21st of May 1919.
On November 6th 1919 he returned to Australia and was discharged on the 29th of November 1919.
