John William Gunn (SN 39648) born at Ballarat, was a 22 year old engine driver when he enlisted in Melbourne on November 9th 1917. He embarked aboard the Port Darwin on April 30th 1918 and sailed to England. He joined the 6th Field Artillery Brigade in France just three weeks before the war ended. He returned home aboard the Ascanius, disembarked at Melbourne on November 6th 1919 and was discharged on November 29th.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as William G. Gunn.
