Edwin Charles Grenfell, a plumber from Ballarat East, enlisted in the 1st Battalion on 3 September 1914 at the age of 32. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board Transport A19 Afric on 18 October 1914. He was admitted to hospital for shell shock on 25 April 1916 and for gas poisoning on 27 July 1916. He received a field promotion to Lance Corporal on 4 August 1917 and to Corporal on 2 August 1918. He received his final discharge and returned to Australia 23 October 1918.
