Edwin Charles Grenfell (SN 1012) born in Ballarat, was a 32 year old plumber when he enlisted in Sydney on September 7th1914. He embarked from Sydney aboard the Afric on October 18th destined to serve at Gallipoli with the 1st Infantry Battalion. After Gallipoli he served in France from March 1916 and in July he was evacuated suffering from gas poisoning and shell shock. In March 1917 he was transferred to the 61st Battalion and continued to serve until he was granted ‘1914 leave' before the war ended. He returned to Australia aboard the Durham, disembarked at Melbourne on December 23rd 1918 and was discharged on February 21st 1919.
His brother John also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
