Clarence Roy Mitchell (SN 4015) born at Kilmore, was a 22 year old schoolteacher when he enlisted on January 22nd 1915. On March 20th he embarked aboard the Shropshire and sailed to Egypt to serve with the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade. In May 1916 he was admitted to hospital suffering from enteric fever. He was then transferred to Australian Administrative Headquarters in London until he was returned to Australia aboard the Nestor. He disembarked in Sydney on March 8th 1917 and was discharged medically unfit on March 30th.
His brother Clive also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as C. Roy Mitchell.
