Biography

Clarence Roy Mitchell, a School Teacher from Reedy Creek (Near Broadford, Vic) enlisted as a Gunner with the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade on 25 January 1915 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on 20 February 1915. He was hospitalised with dysentery on 18 June 1915 and released to duty a few days later. On 8 March 1916 Gunner Mitchell was promoted to Lance Sergeant and again to Staff Sergeant on 6 May 1916. After a bout of influenza Sergeant Mitchell was given a medical discharge and returned to Australia 26 December 1916.
