Clive Leslie Mitchell was born in Broadford, VIC and was a Bank Clerk by trade when he enlisted in the 2nd Field Ambulance, Section A on 16 March 1915 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne on the Ajana on June 4th and arrived at Gallipoli in early September, just after the August offensive. After Gallipoli and a short period in Egypt he moved to France in late March 1916. In mid-1917 he was hospitalised on several occasions suffering from rhinitis, then in March 1918 he was returned to hospital suffering from an ulcerated throat. When the war ended he returned to Australia on the Derbyshire and disembarked at Melbourne on April 22nd 1919.
