William Hugh Clarke was born at Ballarat,Victoria. He was a Plumber and tinsmith by trade, was married and age 43 when he enlisted on 15 July 1915 in Ballarat. He embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on 11 October 1915. He joined the Battalion 20/1/16. Admitted to hospital from Gassing 24/4/18. He returned to Australia 31 March 1919.
