William Hugh Clarke (SN 3291) was born in Ballarat where he enlisted as a married 43 year old plumber and tinsmith on July 24th 1915. Assigned to the 7th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Nestor on October 11th and soon after arriving in Egypt he was transferred to the 5th Pioneer Battalion. He served in France from late June 1916 until he was gassed while on picket duty near Villers-Bretonneux in April 1918. He was returned to Australia aboard the Kyber, disembarked at Melbourne on May 12th 1919 and was discharged soon afterwards.
