Alfred Ernest Clarke (SN 2704) born at Ballarat, was a 40 year old farm labourer when he enlisted in Warrnambool on January 24th 1916. He embarked aboard the Euripides assigned with the 2nd Australian Tunnelling Company and reached France in mid-May . He avoided war wounds but was hospitalised several times with mumps and enteritis. He returned home aboard the Rio Negro, disembarked on July 18th 1919 and was discharged on September 5th 2019.
His brothers Charles, William and Aubrey all served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue. His cousin Thomas also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
