Bertram Frederick Adamson (SN 1301 / 1269) from Drummond Street, had attended the Pleasant Street State School and was an 18 year old painter when he enlisted on October 27th 1914. He embarked from Melbourne on the Clan Macgillivray on February 1st 1915, destined to serve on Gallipoli with the 8th Battalion. A serious case of dysentery caused his evacuation from Gallipoli, first to Mudros, then to Heliopolis in Egypt and finally to England. He rejoined his unit in France in September 1916. In April 1918 he suffered a head wound which took him out of the line for a short period but on August 9th 1918 he sustained a serious gunshot wound to his leg that again required his evacuation to England. While recovering in England he was severely reprimanded for "neglect of orders, being in bed at 0800". He was returned to Australia aboard the Argyllshire reaching Melbourne on February 1st 1919, exactly four years after his departure. He was discharged two months later.
His brother George also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
