James Leslie Furness (SN 682) born in Shepparton, was a 35 year old dentist when he enlisted on July 12th 1915. Assigned to the 31st Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Wandilla on November 9th destined for service in France. He was wounded twice during his service, a gunshot wound to the back in July 1916 and a gunshot wound to his left hand in September 1917. After treatment and recovery in England he returned to France in April 1918 and saw out the remainder of the war without further injury. He returned to Australia on the Trasos Montes and was discharged on July 15th 1919.
His sister Dorothea also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
