Biography

Philip Zahnleiter (SN 1296/1440) was born in Ballarat attended the Christian Brothers School in Victoria Street. He was a 24 year old bricklayer when he enlisted on November 13th 1914. He embarked with the 5th Infantry Battalion in early February 1915, bound for Gallipoli. He was killed in action on just the second day of the Gallipoli campaign, April 26th 1915. He has no known grave and his name is on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

His brother James also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
