Biography

James Philip Zahnleiter (SN 2247) was born in Ballarat and attended Christian Brothers School in Ballarat East. (His second Christian name was Peter according to the Nominal Roll and Commonwealth War Graves Commission) He was a 26 year old compositor when he enlisted on March 15th 1915. He was assigned to the 5th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Sydney on June 25th.He served at Gallipoli from August until the December evacuation. He reached France at the end of March 1916 but on July 25th 1916 he was killed in action at Pozieres. He has no known grave, and his name is on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
His brother Phillip also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
