William Patrick Bergin (SN 472), born in Ballarat, was a 26 year old waiter when he enlisted on July 16th 1915. Posted to the 29th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Ascanius on November 10th. He reached the battlefields of France in June 1916 and was fortunate to avoid serious illness or injury. With the war almost over, he was transferred to the 32nd Battalion in October 1918. He returned home on the Port Macquarie, disembarked at Melbourne on May 26th 1919 and was discharged soon after.
His brothers Thomas, Bernard and Joseph also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
