Thomas Stanley Bergin (SN 2982) was born at Gheringhap but grew up at Warrenheip where he attended the local state school. He was a 22 year old blacksmith when he enlisted at Geelong on August 16th 1915. Assigned to the 5th Field Company Engineers he embarked on November 24th aboard the Ceramic. After reaching Egypt he was transferred to the 10th Field Artillery Brigade, before moving to France in June 1916. On November 1st 1917 he was wounded in action when he received penetrating shrapnel wounds to his back and abdomen which required his evacuation to hospital in England. He was assessed as unfit for further active service and was returned to Australia, disembarking at Melbourne on June 14th 1918. He was discharged on July 30th 1919 as ‘medically unfit, abdomen wound’.
His brothers William, Bernard and Joseph also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
