Biography

Joseph William Darling (SN 1316), the son of Alfred and Bessy from Lydiard Street North, was a 24 year old farmer at Sheep Hills near Warracknabeal when he enlisted in August 1914. He embarked from Melbourne in October aboard the Euripides, first to Albany and then to Egypt as part of the initial ANZAC fleet. As a member of the 3rd Battalion he took part in the historic Gallipoli landing on April 25th 1915 but was wounded and evacuated to hospital in Egypt. He was able to rejoin his unit at Gallipoli in June but then was reported ‘missing in action’ during the Battle of Lone Pine in August. A Court of Inquiry held in June 1916 concluded he had been killed in action on August 7th 1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Lone Pine.
