Biography

Robert Smythe Darling (SN 3305) born at Sheep Hills, was a 23 year old chemist when he enlisted in Melbourne on February 22nd 1915. Allotted to the Australian Medical Corps he embarked for overseas service on June 4th. From late August he served at Gallipoli with the 5th Field Ambulance, then on the Western Front from July 1916. He managed to avoid major battle wounds although he did have an extended period in hospital due to illness. He returned to Australia aboard the Devon, disembarked at Melbourne on November 27th 1919 and was discharged on April 6th 1920.

His brother Joseph also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
