Biography

William James Loats (SN 8037) born in Ballarat, was an 18 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 16th 1915. He left Melbourne aboard the Bakara on November 8th , attached to the 29th Company Australian Army Service Corps. Soon after reaching Egypt he had treatment for an in-grown toenail. He moved on to France in June 1916 and served through the war without major incident, spending part of his service with the 1st Anzac Salvage Company. After the war he returned to Australia aboard the Trasos Montes, reaching Melbourne on May 22nd 1919 and being discharged soon after.

His brother Albert also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
