Herbert James Semmens was born in Toongabbie, but enlisted from Gardenvale on 1th January 1916. He was 27 years old, married, and a civil servant. He was posted to the 38th Infantry Battalion, with Regimental No. 2282A. He was promoted to Corporal during his service. On 13th October 1917 he was killed in action at Passchendaele. His name is on the Menin Gates Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
