Herbert James Semmens (SN 2282A) was born in Toongabbie, but educated at Ballarat’s Grenville College before enlisting in Melbourne on January 17th 1916. 27 years old, married to Daisy, and a civil servant, he was posted to the 38th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne in August on board the Orsova. While training in England, he was promoted to Corporal before being posted to France in August 1917. On October 13th 1917 he was killed in action at Passchendaele. He has no known grave and his name is on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
