Biography

Mary Alice Stella Semmens was born in Toongabbie, Victoria, was single and a Nurse when she enlisted with the British India Service per the 'Mooltan' on 26 December 1916 at the age of 24. She transferred to the Australian Army Nursing Service, her unit disembarked at Port Said ex the Hospital Transport Nile from Bombay in October 1918 and arrived in the UK aboard the Hospital Transport Kaiser-i-Hind on 27 December 1918, receiving a promotion to the rank of Sister on 29 December. She returned to Australia from England, serving as Nursing Staff on 23 March 1919.
