Biography

Mary Alice Stella Semmens (Sister) born at Toongabbie, Victoria, trained as a nurse at the Ballarat Base Hospital. She joined the Australian Army Nursing Service on December 12th 1916 and embarked two weeks later aboard the Mooltan and sailed to Bombay. She then served at hospitals in India and Pakistan until October 1918 when she was recalled to Egypt and then to England. She returned to Australia on nursing duty aboard the Dongola, disembarked at Melbourne on May 16th 1919 and her position was terminated on July 7th.

Her brother Herbert was killed in action in October 1917 and her brother Percy also served in the AIF and they are honoured with trees in the Avenue.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records her name as Stella Semmens.
