Biography

Henry Hollioake (SN 4129) born in Ballarat and whose family home was in Durham Street Ballarat, was 25 years old and mining in Western Australia when he enlisted on January 10th 1916. He embarked from Fremantle on April 1st 1916 on the Ulysses bound for the battlefields of France. While serving with the 28th Battalion he was wounded in action in June 1917, suffering a shrapnel wound to his left shoulder. He eventually returned to Australia aboard the Port Napier, and was discharged on August 6th 1919.

His brother Percy also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Henry Holioake.
