Hugh Cambell Thomson (SN 55234 ) born at Clunes, was an 18 year old student when he enlisted in Ballarat on November 10th 1917. As a General Service Reinforcement, he embarked from Sydney aboard the Orontes on June 5th 1918 and sailed to England. While training in England he was allocated to the 8th Infantry Battalion, but he did not cross to France until after the fighting had ceased. He returned to Australia aboard the Persic, disembarked at Melbourne on August 29th 1919 and was discharged on September 13th.
His brother Frederic also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
