Biography

Frederic McLeod Thomson (SN 3803) born in Launceston, Tasmania, was a 19 year old bank clerk when he enlisted in Melbourne on November 27th 1917. He embarked for England aboard the Nestor on February 28th 1918 and in July he crossed to France to serve with the 57th Infantry Battalion. He came through the final months of the war unscathed before being transferred to the Australian Army Pay Corps for a period of time before returning to Australia. He returned aboard the Ulysses, disembarked at Melbourne on September 2nd 1919 and was discharged on September 25th. He also enlisted to serve during WW2 with service number N319403.

His brother Hugh also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Frederick McL. Thomson.
