George Frederick Stokes was born in Melbourne, Victoria, was single and a Bacon Curer when he enlisted with the 2nd General Service Reinforcements (Egypt) (Victoria) on 12 February 1918 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on 10 June 1918. By this time the war was reaching its conclusion, the armistice being signed five months later. On 17 July 1918 he marched into Central Training Depot, returning to Australia 3 July 1919.
