Biography

George Frederick Stokes (SN 52847) born in Melbourne, was a 19 year old bacon curer when he enlisted in Ballarat on January 29th 1918. With the 2nd General Service Reinforcements, he embarked from Sydney aboard the Wiltshire on June 10th and sailed to Egypt where he was attached to the 8th Light Horse Regiment for the final months of the war. He returned to Australia aboard the Malta, disembarked at Melbourne on August 7th 1919 and was discharged on August 22nd.

His father Frederick also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
