Born in Sebastopol, Victoria, Samuel Edgar Kernick was a single 24 year old horse trainer at the time of his enlistment in Ballarat on the 29th of January 1918. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board RMS Orontes on the 5th of June 1918.
Samuel returned to Australia on the 3rd of April 1919 and was discharged on the 30th of April 1919 as medically unfit.
