Samuel Edgar Kernick (SN 55172) was born in Sebastopol and was a single 24 year old horse trainer at the time of his enlistment in Ballarat on January 29th 1918. He embarked from Sydney on board the Orantes in June. On arrival in England he was allotted to the 60th Battalion before transferring to the 8th Battalion in August. Over the next few months he was admitted to hospital a couple of times with cellulitis. He left England for Australia on board the Ascanius in February 1919 and was discharged from the AIF on April 30th 1919.

His brothers John and Albert also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
