Harrie James Dawson (SN 136) born in Melbourne, was a 23 year old carpenter when he enlisted in Melbourne on January 6th 1915. On May 8th he embarked aboard the Ulysses and in late September he reached Gallipoli for service with the 21st Infantry Battalion. He then went on to serve in France where he reached the rank of sergeant major. He was wounded on two occasions, a leg wound in July 1916 and a hand wound in May 1918 after which he was deemed unfit to continue. He returned to Australia aboard the Orontes disembarked on January 30th 1919 and was discharged on March 30th ‘medically unfit’.
His brother Walter also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Harry J. Dawson.
