Biography

Herbert Lewis (SN 1101) born at Ballarat, was a 20 year old gardener when he enlisted at Ballarat on January 15th 1915. He embarked aboard the Persia on August 10th and on October 24th he landed at Gallipoli to serve with the 4th Light Horse Regiment. Just two days later he was hospitalised then evacuated to Egypt suffering from enteric fever. He was returned to Australia aboard the Commonwealth, disembarked at Melbourne on February 29th 1916 and was discharged medically unfit on August 8th.

His brother Albert also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
