Born in Ballarat, Herbert Lewis was a single 20 year old gardener at the time of his enlistment on the 11th of January 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board RMS Persia on the 10th of August 1915.
Herbert returned to Australia on the 29th of February 1916 and was discharged as medically unfit on the 8th of August 1916 due to enteric fever.
