Born in Bolwarrah, Victoria and a Framer by trade, William Sampson Betteridge was 21 years and single when enlisted on the 19th of January 1916 in the 8th Battalion, 16th Reinforcement, Australian Imperial Force, with the rank of Private, Number 5034. His Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A23 Suffolk on the 1st of April 1916 and was listed as returned to Australia on the 20th of May 1919. Discharged 3rd Military District with the termination of Period of Enlistment on the 16th of August 1919.
