William Sampson Betteridge (SN 5034) born at Bolwarrah, was a 21 year old farmer when he enlisted in Ballarat on January 19th 1916. Assigned to the 8th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Suffolk on April 1st and sailed to England. In July 1916 he crossed to France and managed to serve through the war without major illness or injury. His service from April 1917 was at Divisional Headquarters. He returned home on the Nestor, disembarked on July 2nd 1919 and was discharged on August 16th.
His brother Henry also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
