Biography

William Sampson Betteridge (SN 5034), born in Bolwarrah, Victoria, was a farmer aged 21 years and single when he enlisted on January 19th 1916 in the 8th Battalion, 16th Reinforcement, with the rank of Private. He embarked from Melbourne, on board Suffolk on the April 1st 1916. William returned to Australia on May 20th 1919, and was discharged on the 16th of August 1919.

His brother Henry also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
