Biography

Isaac Henry Betteridge known as Harry, (SN 7209) born at Bolwarrah and attended the Musk Creek State School, was a 31 year old unmarried farmer when he enlisted on January 2nd 1917 at Ballarat. Known as Harry, he was farming near Proston in Queensland, when he returned home to enlist. He was posted initially to the 7th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne on the troopship Ballarat six weeks later. He survived when the Ballarat was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel on Anzac Day 1917. Not long after transferring to the 23rd Infantry Battalion in September 1917, he was wounded and sent to England to recover. He was fatally wounded during the fighting around Mont St Quentin on September 1st 1918, and is buried in the Assevillers British Cemetery, France.

His brother William also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
