Francis Miles Bruce (2nd Lt.) born in Launceston, was a married 34 year old mining engineer when he enlisted in South Australia in February 1916. He embarked aboard the Ulysses on October 25th and sailed to England. In March 1917 he crossed to France to serve with the 2nd Australian Tunnelling Company. He avoided battle wounds but developed severe trench nephritis (inflamed kidneys) and was returned to Australia aboard the Karoola. His appointment was terminated on March 16th 1918.
His brother Aubrey also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
