Aubrey Gordon Bruce (SN 195) born in Launceston Tasmania, was a 25 year old draper when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 16th 1915. On November 12th 1915 he embarked aboard the Orsova bound for Egypt where he would serve with the 1st Australian Remount Unit. While he had occasional illnesses, particularly mumps, he avoided combat wounds and at war’s end he returned to Australia aboard the Burma. He disembarked at Melbourne on August 29th 1919 and was discharged on October 21st.
His brother Francis also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Aubrey C. Bruce.
