Alfred Stanley Hunter (SN 598) born at Ballarat, was a 22 year old labourer when he enlisted at Ballarat on July 13th 1915. Assigned to the Mining Corps, he embarked aboard the Ulysses on February 20th 1916. In May he landed in France to serve with the 2nd Tunnelling Company. His service was mostly trouble free until April 1918 when he was charged with breaking into the kitchen for the purpose of stealing. When the war ended, he returned to Australia aboard the Nestor, disembarked at Melbourne on July 2nd 1919 and was discharged. In July 1951 he was killed in a quarry collapse at Selkirk Bricks in Ballarat

His brother Leslie also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
