Biography

Alfred Roy Smerdon (SN 6380) was born at Mt Rowan, but enlisted in Melbourne on October 11th 1916. He was a printer, 23 years of age, and single. He was posted to 21st Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne on board the Hororata in November, eventually reaching France in May 1917. On September 7th 1918 he was killed in action in the Mont St Quentin area, and is buried in the Peronne Communal Cemetery, France.

His brother Clifford was killed in action in Belgium and is honoured with the adjacent tree in the Avenue.
