Biography

Clifford Charles Smerdon (SN 6381) was born at Mt Rowan and was employed as a farm labourer at Waubra Junction at the time of his enlistment in Melbourne on October 13th 1916. 19 years old and single, he was assigned to the 21st Infantry Battalion with his brother, Roy. They embarked from Melbourne in November on board the Hororata, reaching France in June 1917. On October 9th 1917 he was killed in action at Poelcappelle in Belgium. He has no known grave, and his name is recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

His brother Roy was killed in action in France and is honoured with the adjacent tree in the Avenue.
