Biography

Raymond McCraw (SN 347) born in Ballarat, was a 22 year old jackeroo when he enlisted in Melbourne on February 24th 1916. Posted to the 37th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Persic on June 3rd, ultimately reaching France in November. In April 1918 he sustained a severe gunshot wound to his left wrist that required his evacuation to England. While in London he was charged for being absent without leave for one day then, with the war in its final months he was transferred to the 5th Battalion. He returned home on the Orca, disembarked on March 31st 1919 and was discharged on May 22nd.

His brother Hector also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
