Biography

George Francis ‘Frank’ Dixon (SN 32366) born at Ballarat, was a 30 year old engine driver when he enlisted in Melbourne on October 9th 1916. He embarked aboard the Osterley on February 17th 1917 and sailed to England. In August he crossed to France for service with the 5th Field Artillery Brigade and on October 31st 1917 he suffered a gunshot wound to his right knee. After the fighting had ceased, he was detached to the Graves Registration Department and spent 4 months working in France. He returned to Australia aboard the Ajana, disembarked at Melbourne on October 11th 1919 and was discharged on November 18th.

His brother Charles also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Frank G. Dixon.
