Dennis Thomas Miles (653/Capt.) born at Serviceton, was a 21 year old clerk when he enlisted in Melbourne on February 10th 1915. He embarked aboard the Ulysses on May 8th and with the 22nd Infantry Battalion he saw action at Gallipoli. He was rapidly promoted, and he was a lieutenant by the time he reached France in April 1916. By October 1917 he was a captain and in January 1918 he was Mentioned in Despatches. He returned to Australia aboard the Chemnitz, and his appointment was terminated on November 9th 1919.
His brother Michael also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
