George Arnold Gates (SN 2146), born at Ballarat, was an 18 year old butcher when he enlisted on February 23rd 1915. On June 17th he embarked aboard the Wandilla to serve with the 14th Infantry Battalion. He landed at Gallipoli on August 1st 1915 and on August 21st he suffered a severe gunshot wound to his left thigh which fractured his femur. He was evacuated to hospital at Malta before being transferred to England where his left leg was amputated. Now rendered unfit for active service, he departed England aboard the Karoola on April 12th 1916 and reached Melbourne a month later. After further treatment he was discharged ‘medically unfit, amputation’ on December 30th 1916.
