Arthur Roy Leech (SN 220) born in Ballarat , was an 18 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on March 15th 1915. He embarked aboard the Euripides on May 10th and sailed to Egypt. He joined the 24th Battalion at Gallipoli in late August 1915 and served there until the evacuation in December. Back in Egypt he was transferred to the Anzac Police with whom he served for the remainder of the war. He was hospitalised for treatment for a hernia but otherwise he came through the war without a major problem. He returned to Australia aboard the Dorset, disembarked at Melbourne on June 11th 1919 and was discharged on August 10th . He also served during World War 2 with service number V80226.
His brother Stanley also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Roy A. Leech.
